CHAPTER TWENTY

Alta

After having sexy time with my girlfriend all morning and afternoon, the last thing I want to do is what I’m doing now. Feels like I’m walking on sunshine, pulling up to San Francisco International Airport terminal 3, where my parents are waiting. True to form, my folks look like traditional Jewish people. Pa is dressed in his usual white button-up, brown suit, and Yarmulke atop his head. Ma changed her wig. This one is a dark black and falls to her shoulders. She appears conservative in her long black jacket, ankle-length jean skirt and tucked red blouse. I see them waiting on the sidewalk, two large luggage at their side. They have yet to see me, but this will change in two seconds.

Pulling up to the curb draws their attention. Eileen is at home, so it’s just me. I pop open the trunk before hopping out of the car. Pa has a wide grin on his face upon seeing my approach. Ma doesn’t share my father’s enthusiasm, so I hug Pa first.

“Hey, Pa--” Words cut short as I find myself buried in his embrace. He smells of cologne and airport terminal.

“You look, lovely daughter,” Pa says as he releases me.

I smile up at him for a moment, then turn to my mother. She smiles a courteous one, hugs me quickly, then pushes her bag into my hand, saying, “We better get a move on it.”

With that, we load the car up then settle into our seats. Me behind the wheel, father in the passenger side and mother in the back sulking as if this visit wasn’t her idea.

Silence settles in the space around us as I pull out of the terminal, headed for the freeway. It’s annoying how shielded my mother is being right now. This is precisely why I left Eileen at home. Well, this and the fact that our place smelled heavily of sex. She needs to make sure it airs out before we make it home.

I break the silence, asking, “So, how was the flight?”

Mother sighs and says, “Long.”

Not sure what else to say, I allow the space to be filled with the sound of tires rolling against the highway at eighty-miles-per-hour. I don’t drive this fast on a typical occasion, but it is safe to say that I’m ready to get home.

“Sorry, the flight was long. I usually have a layover, so it doesn’t feel as bad,” I say, trying to break the awkwardness that keeps settling around us.

“It wasn’t too bad, teddy--” Pa calls me teddy. A childhood nickname that stemmed from my love of teddy bears. “We had WIFI on the flight, which made time seem to tick by a bit faster. I looked up the area you live in. I’m so excited to see it.”

“Yes, and excited to meet your roommate, too,” Mother adds in a tone that tells me she is not excited to be meeting Eileen.

“Eileen can’t wait to see you either…” Tick of my blinker sounds around us as I get over in the right lane.
